Of a philosophical nature, this painting depicts man during the high Renaissance, when having emerged out of the ignorance of the dark ages, he awakened in a burst of creativity.
The image of the man is looking upward and beginning to reach out, he having now discovered and adopted the ancient Platonic philosophy of seeking beauty and truth in life and nature. But still, dark figures behind him try to hold him to his own primeval origins. The Renaissance was a time of contrast; the extremes of war and cruelty against a tremendous surge of creativity and intellectual thinking. |
